Weekly Review!! INCLUDING $1 *GEMS*

Since I'm in the middle of a big project/review for this blog I have little time and not enough faces to try out all the products I have, BUT that doesn't stop me. I figure I'll just take you back to the basics.
Today I'll be listing some items that are major must haves! All of them, depending on where you buy them, can be bought for as little as $1, making every item a $1 *GEM* !!!

Q-tips/Cotton Swabs - ( $1-$4 ) These are an essential, because they can be used for everything head to toe. In a pinch I've used them as eyeshadow applicators. They can also be used to smudge eyeliner, apply concealer  (but not blend it),  apply lipstick and if you and a little bit of remover, you can use them to clean up areas where you made "makeup mistakes."
No brand it better than the other when being used for any of the above purposes. Some people have preferences, but personally I get mine from the $1 store.

Cotton Rounds- ( $1-$3 ) I used these for the first time at the Sephora event I went to. Before that, I never really had any luck with cotton pads b/c they always left a fuzzy film on my face. These pads do not leave any fuzz behind dry or wet. They can be used dry or wet. I use them to remove makeup, specifically eye makeup. The shape fits perfectly in my eye socket. These pads also come in square but, I'm partial to the round. I like circles better than squares anyway :)
You can also use these to apply toner and creams. I used them to apply my papaya treatment during the 2 weeks of kitchen skin care. Again the brand does not matter. The $1 pads are just as durable as the $3 pads.

Ulta Premium Round Cotton Pads 80 Ct

Makeup Wedges-( $1- $7) I use these everyday to blend my makeup. When I first started using them I wondered what the difference between brands was and it's NOTHING. Any brand is fine to use. They do com in different sizes though. The larger wedge shown I from Ulta. I used these and can get about 3 used out of it before discarding it. When I do makeup on someone else, I like using the smaller one. The smaller ones are only good for 1 time use b/c of their size. You can wash these sponges, but I have never been successful at it. I never get all the makeup off. Plus, I'm eerie about leaving them out to dry. If they don't dry thoroughly, they could get mildewed and no one would want to use that on their face?
I like the triangle shape b/c I can get into all the nooks and crannies of the face, like underneath the eyes and by the nose. Also when I'm using the large wedge I use 1 side and 1 corner and the rest of the wedge is clean for the next application.
Below are a couple links to website to buy these wedges, but you can also get them from a discount store or beauty supply store.

Ulta brand wedge large $1.99 for 8

Foam Tipped dual eyeshadow applicators - ( $1-$6) I have never seen the purpose of these b/c again, I've always had bad luck. They fall apart, are often hard to use and hardly apply any shadow. I never knew why people would want to use these. But, I discovered the reason and have grown to like (not love) them. I have come across some hard, very compact, pressed eyeshadows. When trying to use a brush, color does not get picked up properly therefore, I use these and they actually work! I was surprised. I have been a fan of tossing these things as well, but I tried washing some from e.l.f. and they did not fall apart! The Ulta ones seem just as sturdy. I am not sure how long they will last, since I just starting using them. They are good for application and blending. Just be sure when applying multiple colors to use different sides of the applicator and a clean side for blending.

THIS WEEKS REVIEW!! Primer...and primer like products!

Makeup primer is not necessarily a necessity, but if you really want your makeup to last all day, like from work/school in the day time, to party and maybe after party at night, it's a good idea. I normally use primer for events and if I know I'm going to be out of my house for more than 8 hours.
But which one to use? I hear you asking. Here are some reviews to help you out -with extra added commentary about oily skin gals like 'moi'!
I wore the same powder foundation (Max Factor), concealer ( Coastal Scents) and corrector (MUD) everyday and DID NOT use a setting spray as I normally do. I used a pea-sized amount for every product. I kept my makeup on for up to 12 hours and checked at the 6  hour mark for shininess and the 8 hour mark to check the coverage.
Our first product is not a primer, but my mom saw on the internet that it can be used as such. Since I'm curious, as always, I decided to try it.

Monistat Soothing Care $9 (drugstore.com)- Now this is a skin protectant for chaffing, but WTH!
First of all it says 'silky' on the label, and it really is silky! I wish all skin products felt this smooth.
I have to say it worked! My makeup stayed on all day, I did get a little shiny in my t-zone area, but I didn't feel oily. My makeup went on as normal. I recommend this product b/c it does double duty! You can use it on your face and...other areas. For $9, having a product that does double duty is golden!

NYC Perfecting Primer $4- ( local drugstores)- I  decided to try this product b/c it was on sale and it was my first primer ever! I have used it before but that was in my "Pre.B." days (pre blog), so I wasn't taking notice. The first thing I did notice though is that this product was thin and had a shimmer to it. When I applied it to my face, it was still shimmery so yes, I was concerned. Then I started to apply my makeup and it was the smoothest application I've ever experienced! I was amazed at what little amount of blending I had to do. My makeup lasted all day with the same shininess as with the other product. Do I recommend this? Of course! just go get it! Like yesterday!! I would say I am partial to this product because of the all day wear and easier makeup application.

Ulta Fabulous Face Foundation Primer $6- (Ulta)- This was the first Ulta brand product I tried. I liked it. It lasted all day and had some of the same ingredients as the Monistat. It even looks and feels the same. My makeup went on the same as always and I had the same shininess with this product as with the others.

3 Smashbox Primers $39 each- ( Sephora, Smashbox) I have the sample sizes shown here.

1. Photofinish Foundation Primer w/ SPF15- My, my, my, how I really expected this to be good!
I was very disappointed! My makeup was off before I even made it home, it was terrible! I thought I would work being that it has a lot of the same ingredients as the Monistat. Maybe it's the added SPF that makes it come off so easily, I don't know. I just know I don't like it.

2. Photofinish Hydrating Primer- Product was a lot better that the other one. It had more of a lotion consistency. It was thinner and creamier than the original Smashbox primer. This one lasted all day w/o incident! I was still shiny, but that seems to be a common factor with every product.
No change in the way my makeup went on. This product did have a weird smell. I could even smell it while it was on my face. Once I put my makeup on the smell went away.

3. Photofinish Primer- This one is a replica of the first w/o the added SPF.
It lasted long than the first one too, which I was surprised to see. The overall results were the same as the hydrating primer.

Overall, I say I experienced the least amount of  "evening shininess" with the Monistat. I did not find much difference in quality with many of the primers even at the higher price points. I would much rather use a cheaper primer to achieve the same results as a more expensive one.
If you have any questions or comments please leave them below and I'll respond ASAP!

Review #2 -Lipgloss!! (from last week!)

So we love it and can't live without it! I don't know anyone who doesn't use some type of lip product.

These are what I use:
1.vitamin e oil {in chap stick form}-( Daily) In my research I found out that regular chap stick is not really recommended for frequent use b/c your lip get dependent on it and might stop producing there own moisture, resulting in super chapped lips. These use of vitamin e capsules is supposed to be safer, just pop them with a needle and squeeze a bit on your lips. Dilemma-what to do with the rest of the capsule? You can eat it if you like, or put it on your skin or in your hair.

2. ELF lip exfoliate scrub (once/twice a month)- I have dry lips so I need to scrub off the cracked skin every once in a while. This product might be too harsh for some people so just stay away from it!
But, if you are going to exfoliate be sure to moisturize after, perhaps with some vitamin e oil.

3.Blistex (daily-in the colder months)- what can I say about this that you don't already know? It's protecting, moisturizing and some have SPF. If normal Blistex is to harsh try the gentle or 'flavored' ones, they are more mild.

NOW ON TO THE REVIEW!

C.O. Bigelow Cinnamint Menthalip shine lipgloss $7.50 ( Bath & Body Works)- First let me say I LOVE getting these on sale! I have about 8 left. This product is moisturizing, shiny w/o being too shiny and ALSO freshens your breath! It doesn't taste all that bad either. :)
This is my go to lip gloss. I always have one in my bag for emergency shine and just in case I forget my gum. :)
I love this product b/c it does all the things listed above without being sticky. It lasts at least a few hours, but the moisturizing properties last even though the shine is gone. It's even great over lipstick and has an easy to clean plastic applicator.

Victoria Secret Sparkle Gloss $14 (Victoria Secret store)- I received this as a gift or else I would never buy a $14 lip gloss from a lingerie store...plus it was on sale! The gloss has fine sparkles in it for extra shine. It smells of artificial cherries and is pink, of course. It has the typical fluffy cloth applicator. It's just OK. It moisturizes a little bit, but will do nothing for dry lips. The shine wear off in about a couple hours, if that. It's probably the same as any $1 store lip gloss. It does have a cute package though.

Smashbox Lip Enhancing Mega Gloss $18- (Sephora) - I actually won this and was super excited, b/c it was a full sized sample. I have 'stardom', it's a very light pink/peachy color with gold flecks of glitter. When applied it give a twinkle effect like stars appearing in the sky.( was that too much gushing :/ )  This lip gloss is not sticky.  Actually, it's gotten way less sticky since I had it. When I put it on for the first time it was very sticky, like it stuck my lips together, but now it's great! It's thick, and has more qualities of a protector than that of a moisturizer, but it will stop your lips from being dry. It's great worn alone. When worn with lipstick the slight color will add an additional tint. It also lasts a few hours, even when drinking ice coffee (or wine).  Comes with a BIG fluffy applicator.

Last but NOT LEAST...

Mary Kay "Signature" Lipgloss trio $14 - (marykay.com)- I got this pack in a gift basket years ago and I'm surprised I still have them! I don't even know if Marykay still carries these, but I figured I'd mention them. If worse comes to worst you can always find them on eBay. Anyway the trio, obviously comes with 3 colors. I have 2 shown and I'm pretty the third is hiding in a bag somewhere.
The set came with a clear, bronze, golden/copper color. When I got these I was not wearing lipstick at all even for special occasions I would wear one of the tinted colors. Either goes perfectly with a natural look, especially if you want to dress it up. The clear ( which is almost empty) I used over my lipsticks, stains, pencils, or just on it's own. These are not really moisturizing, but they are creamy and have lots of staying power.

2 Weeks of $1 *GEM*'s

First *GEM* is  a lip pencil by Nicka K. This is the first time I tried her products. The pencil is soft, pigmented and shimmery. It's almost an iridescent shine. I would not use this color everyday, but this pencil is great. It goes on smooth and takes work to get it off.  This is available at beauty supply stores.

The next *GEM* is a lipstick by NYC. It's slightly pigmented, but has great moisturizing properties and shimmer. It also stays for a long time. I choose this as a *GEM* because shimmer lipsticks usually don't have the pigmentation of regular lipsticks. This one is inexpensive and works just good as any other lipstick of it's type. So if you're looking for a shimmer lipstick try this brand. I actually bought it on the fly when I left my regular lipstick at home. I was not disappointed. This is available at drug stores in the cosmetic section.

Weekly Review #1 Revlon NAKED and Maybelline FIT Me!

Revlon Nearly Naked ($10)- I love this powder foundation and it quickly became my everyday favorite! It comes it 5 shades- Fair, Light, Medium, Medium/Deep and Deep.
I like it because it is so light it's like you're not wearing anything at all. But with light weight also comes light coverage. I would recommend a liquid (or cream) foundation for a fuller coverage or even a BB cream.
This powder is breathable, light, airy and PERFECT for summer. It also easily blends with your skin tone and does not leave you with that ghostly appearance in pictures.

Maybelline Fit Me! ($9)- This is an OK powder foundation. This powder is available in at least 10 colors. The numbers on the powder are supposed to make it easy to match a liquid foundation.  I didn't really care for this because the powder was too yellow. I have red undertones and even though this was a lighter weight powder than most, it still left me with a yellow tint. This foundation does give you more coverage than the Revlon naked, but still lighter than a regular powder. It's still light and breathable. The case is cute and compact and comes with a mirror and applicator. I use a brush to apply my powder and a lot of it gets wasted, there is just so much excess powder that gets all over the place.

REVIEW!!!! Eyelid Primer

We all want our eyeshadow to POP, stay on all day and be true to color. I tested 3 eyeshadow primers for these 3 reasons. I did realize the fault in my trials though, I only used powder shadows. I did not take into account to use cream or pencil shadows with these primers, but that will be done another day.

First I tested my e.l.f. eye primer and liner sealer. This tube is an eye primer on one side and the other side is a sealer so you can make any eyeshadow into a liner by using it. Since it was $3.00 I figure I'd give it a try. It was the first primer I ever used. My most fond memory of this product is when I slept in all my make up and woke up with it still in tact. I know this product works. You have to put in on evenly, otherwise when the shadow creases, it's very noticeable. Since it is a skin tone color, it can be covered very easily by any color shadow.

this is my makeup using the primer

Next, I used the Urban Decay eyeshadow Primer Potion in Sin. Urban Decay is a great brand and at $20 at Sephora, it shows. I did not know this primer was tinted until I tried it. The color resembles champagne or a pale shimmery gold. It can actually be used as eyeshadow on its own. I had to add more shadow than normal to fully cover the color and shimmer of the primer. My makeup did not crease and my shadow either faded or was soaked up by the primer, because by the end of the night I could see the primer color coming through from underneath by shadow. I would probably only use this color primer for browns, golds, and earth tones. I think the untinted primer would work better under any color.

Last, but not least I used the NYX eyeshadow primer in white. After applying the primer to your eye it does look a little intimidating. It's best to let the primer dry for a few seconds before applying the shadow. You only need a little bit! It goes a long way. My shadow did not crease and lasted the whole day. It also POPPED! The white base under and eyeshadow enables the color to come out pure and bright. It's also a great price at $6.

3 weeks of $1 *GEM's*

YES! I've been slacking on my $1 *GEM's*. Not because they are hard to find, but I have so many products I haven't even tried yet.
So, I figured I'd tell you about products that I have been using and LOVE. These products are all by
eyeslipsface (e.l.f.)

The first is the eyeshadow brush. It's about 5.5 inches long (bristles are 3/8 of an inch)
I love this brush because it's thick, soft, holds a lot of powder and is inexpensive. I've been using this brush for a few months and it's still in new condition. I loved it so much the first time I used it that I bought 3 more.

Our next *GEM* is oil blotting sheets. The package contains 50 sheets. For us oily gals, most likely we know and love this product, no matter what brand it is. But, oil blotting sheets are not just for the face. They can be used as blotting papers for lips too! TIP- to keep lipstick on longer, apply lipstick, blot lips on oil blotting paper and reapply lipstick. Using the blotting papers helps remove excess oil. Removing that excess oil helps lipstick stay on longer.

The last *GEM* is shimmer eyeliner pencil. These pencils come in 8 colors...and I own them all. I like these pencils because they go on smooth and come with a built in sharpener. People have reported that this liner smudges, but I have never had that problem. The black can be used for everyday because it is the least shimmery of all the colors. Because of my skin tone I can also use the bronze as an everyday liner too. I would say the only downside to these pencils is the size. They are only 4 inches long. For something this great I wish it were bigger.
